Homestead Exemption, Okaloosa and Santa Rosa Counties in Florida

by Andrew Iremonger

Homestead Exemption time is right around the corner, here is what you need to know.

Homestead exemptions tax season time is upon us.

You guys have probably seen something from Mr. Ben Anderson

if you live in Okaloosa County, than your taxes may have just changed.

We're not going to talk about that,

but we are talking about homestead exemption because it is right around the corner.

Yes by March 1st, March 1st is when you need to apply by do not wait untill March first,

you need to be in your home by December 31st of this year for you to apply for that.

You also need to be a resident. By December 31st and change your license and car registration.

Make sure that you change your residency to become a Florida Resident and you also

Need to update your driver's license as well.

If you bought a home this year please make sure you get all

Of that stuff done prior to December 31st,

if you're thinking about buying right now, you can still get into a Sales

Contract and close before December 31st, you've got about three weeks

or so to find a home and put it under contract.

Yeah, so go out there and get your driver's license changed and all that good stuff

Homestead Exemption will provide a large discount on your property taxes for the year.

Another big tax break happens when you are Active Duty/Reserve/Guard and you deploy. You will not pay any taxes for the duration that you were gone. This is great information but you need to ensure you fill out the proper paperwork once you return home to get this credit, it will not be automatic.

There are plenty of other exemptions that most may not be aware of – so it is worthwhile to go online and check out what they have.

You can visit your County's website to find out all the different ways.

And if you have questions, you can give your friendly realtor a call or give us a call.

If you are local here in the area for Okaloosa County the website would be okaloospa.com and for Santa Rosa County the website is srcpa.org.

Come January 15th any of our past clients, if you purchased in the last two

Years, is going to get the entire package including the homestead exemption paperwork.

Everything's going to get sent to you via email.

So be looking out for that.

If you have any questions, feel free to give us a call at 850.543.2260.
