You are thinking of moving to Destin and you want to know the pro’s and con’s of living in Destin directly from a local. Well after talking with dozens of our past clients and friends who live in Destin, we came up with our Pro’s and Con’s list for living in Destin.

Andrew here with the Emerald Group right here in Destin, Florida. If this is your first time to this blog and you want to know everything about Destin and the surrounding area’s, well we do lots of blogs and videos about everything you need to know!

Honestly, we love all the phone calls, emails and texts we get every single day of people moving to the Emerald Coast! If you are thinking about moving or relocating, make sure you reach out to us, give us a call, send a text, shoot us an email or send that carrier pigeon our way. However, you’d like to get a hold of us, we have your back when moving to the Florida Panhandle!

With a little help from past clients and friends, we came up with this little list of Pro’s and Con’s about living in Destin. We are going to jump right into our pros and cons list but you MUST stick around for our 3rd Con on our list because it could make or break whether you’d like to live in this beautiful city or not.

I like looking at the positives, so let’s start with a “Pro” of living in Destin.

1.       Pro 1: You are right in the heart of all the action!

Pace: auto; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 200%; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo1;">a.       It doesn’t matter if you want to hit a restaurant or the beach, you are always just a few short minutes away from either.

Pace: auto; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 200%; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo1;">b.       Festivals, events, action, fun, shop, play, you name it, it’s right around the corner living in Destin.

2.       Con 1: During Spring break, lasting 6 weeks for us, and the summer months, traffic can be brutal

Pace: auto; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 200%; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo1;">a.       This isn’t a huge issue once you start planning for it but if you aren’t expecting it to take 20 minutes to go 4 miles, it can be a bit frustrating. Don't get me started if there is a wreck.

3.       Pro 2: Fishing!

Pace: auto; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 200%; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo1;">a.       Eloquently named and known as the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village”, Destin is home to some of the best saltwater fishing the US

Pace: auto; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 200%; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo1;">b.       Whether it’s red snapper, amberjack, grouper, king mackerel, tuna, cobia, blue marlin or sailfish you’re after, chances are, you’ll catch what you’re looking for if you take advantage of Destin, Florida’s well-earned reputation as the world’s luckiest fishing village

4.       Con 2: Heat and Humidity

Pace: auto; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 200%; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo1;">a.       While June, July and August have an average temperature in the high 80s, the humidity during these months make it feel brutal at times.

Pace: auto; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 200%; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo1;">b.       Our sporadic rainfall, heat, and humidity are often hard to predict, making it difficult to know if you need a fan, an umbrella or sunscreen to leave the house.

5.       Pro 3: Beaches!

Pace: auto; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 200%; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo1;">a.       Our Pride and joy, we don’t call it the Emerald Coast for nothing, the Emerald Green waters splashing against our powder white beaches is enough to make anyone jealous.

Pace: auto; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 200%; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo1;">b.       Top that off with the fact that Destin doesn’t mess around when it comes to all things water and fun – ensures that Destin will remain a staple for tourists and locals alike.

6.       Con 3 – The one I said stick around for is no joke, Hurricanes

Pace: auto; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 200%; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo1;">a.       Yes they are real, yes they are scary and yes you may have to evacuate.

Pace: auto; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 200%; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo1;">b.       This seems all well and good when you think, well as long as I leave the area it will all be good… until you have to come back and pick up the pieces. Maybe it won’t be a direct hit, but the entire Emerald Coast feels it when we, or one of our beloved neighbors gets slammed.

7.       Pro 4 – Weather all around

Pace: auto; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 200%; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo1;">a.       For you golfers out there, our winters are a bit chilly, but only for about 8 weeks or so, outside of that, we have golf weather for 40 to 45 weeks out of the year.

Pace: auto; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 200%; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo1;">b.       All in all, our high heat months aren’t so high that you will melt immediately, and our lows aren’t so cold that you will even need to own a heavy coat, let alone a snow shovel.

8.       Con 4 – Jobs

Pace: auto; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 200%; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo1;">a.       For those looking to relocate down here and have a plethora of great paying careers out here, we don’t have as many as a lot of populated area’s. In fact, in Destin and the direct surrounding area’s, the largest employers are the US Military, Hospitality and Defense Contractors in that order.

Pace: auto; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 200%; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo1;">b.       Though this doesn’t mean you can’t come down and find great work, it’s just a little more limited than some more populated cities.

9.       Pro 5 – Quality of life

Pace: auto; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 200%; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo1;">a.       The overall Pace of a beach town like Destin is a bit more relaxed and a bit more slow Paced which in turns, means more relaxing.

Pace: auto; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 200%; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo1;">b.       The overall feel of the people here is that there is a large chunk of nice people in general, it’s not uncommon to make friends just about anywhere you go. Whether you find a new friend sitting in a beach bar enjoying a drink, or a new couple to hang out with that you met at the shopping outlets

10.   Con 5 – Lack of Amenities

Pace: auto; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 200%; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo1;">a.       Okay, it’s hard to compare a relatively small town like Destin to the hustle and bustle of the City, but if you do, you will realize, we don’t have everything that a large city or metropolitan does.

Pace: auto; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 200%; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo1;">b.       If you are looking for that Gluten free, sugar free, soy based, icing free, cupcake shop that you have around the block in your city, well you might be disappointed

11.   Pro 6 – Small town feel, most of the time

Pace: auto; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 200%; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo1;">a.       Well that is exactly it, MOST of the time, Destin isn’t as big of a town as the traffic would lead you to believe. If you swing by during our “off season” you will find locals taking over the standard tourist spots with a smile.

Pace: auto; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 200%; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo1;">b.       For well over half the year, the traffic has calmed down, the lines are short, the service is outstanding and everyone knows your name, sort of! That small town southern hospitality never leaves, but as a local, we feel a certain kind of service in the air when the chaos dies down.

12.   Con 6 – Housing Prices

Pace: auto; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 200%; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo1;">a.       Being Realtors in this area for as many years as we have been, we get it, Destin doesn’t have the greatest prices. In retrospect the prices are outstanding compared to what you get as far as location and amenities but to a good chunk of the country, they don’t seem like great prices at first glance.

Pace: auto; text-indent: -.25in; line-height: 200%; mso-list: l0 level2 lfo1;">b.       Although depending on where you are coming from, you may be able to afford a whole heck of a lot vs your current town. For more information on up to date pricing out here in Destin, contact us directly via text, phone call or email.

Well after that shameless plug I think it’s about time we wrap up this week’s video about the pro’s and the con’s of living in Destin Florida.

Don’t forget that if you are wanting to move into the Destin Florida Pacerun: yes;"> or surrounding area’s to give us a call, shoot a text, send an email or send that carrier pigeon – however you would like to get a hold of us, we will be here.
